Hi out there, I'm new to the tractor 'hobby' and sitting here waiting for delivery of my BX23 (trying to think of more justification for wife...). I've got alot of granite rocks to move (1-2 ft dia). Any feedback on 'Thumbs'? I'm looking at CDP-Backhoe 3/8" thick plates.

They are very handy indeed.
However, like forks for the FEL bucket, every pound you add to the machine is a pound less in useful lifting capability.
I have found them handiest at things like loading brush or tearing out rotten wood, retaining walls and the like. The really make short work of loading broken concrete, bricks, and pavers.

Paul, it is also very important to match the thumb's hydraulic demands to the psi and gpm of your machine, that is, provided you are interested in the hydraulic type. There are some thumbs that just pin in place and can be removed or folded flat on the dipper stick when not in use. If you go with the hydraulic type, you will have to decide how the flow is going to get to the thumb, where you are going to mount the control valve (where it won't interfere with other controls), and that location should be well out of range of the boom's full range of motion. ....

Hey guys,
CDP makes it pretty easy to make your own backhoe thumb with that nice blueprint on their website. Grab your chopsaw and welder and save a bunch of $$$ and make your own backhoe thumb. Even a student in high school metal shop class can handle this easy to do project. Weight of thumb is about 25 pounds depending on size you make and reduction in capbability due to a measily 25 pounds on the dipper is miniscule. Folds up under the dipper when not needed. A good metal project that comes in REAL handy. ....
